South African summers are hotter, busier, and sometimes more unpredictable than ever. From sudden storms to crowded streets and public spaces, the festive season can bring surprises. Across the country, initiatives driven through the Partnership for Risk and Resilience (P4RR) programme are contributing to resilient and more prepared neighbourhoods.
Santam supported various education and awareness activities through community outreach, school-based initiatives and have reached over 180 000 people to date. Furthermore, five (5) targeted campaigns were implemented in targeted areas during 2025. These included:
Across the country, initiatives driven through the Santam Partnership for Prevention (P4RR) are quietly shaping safer, greener, and more prepared neighbourhoods.
Cooler, greener spaces
Over 350 indigenous and fruit trees were planted in high-risk areas this year, with more than 1,000 trees nationwide, creating greener, healthier spaces for generations to come. Tree planting is a vital urban greening strategy that mitigates heat stress and fosters cooler, more resilient communities.
Flood risk reduction
In Tshwane, 1,000 stormwater catchpits were cleared to reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rains, helping keep travel and daily routines uninterrupted.
Community preparedness
Over 1,500 educators, volunteers, and local leaders received disaster readiness training to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to disasters effectively, while the school competitions and awareness campaigns teach kids the importance of safety and environmental care. Training programs equip young people with technical skills, meaning safer neighbourhoods and faster responses during unexpected weather events.
Stronger local partnerships
New collaborations with municipalities ensure that communities are better equipped to handle climate-related risks for years to come. And they aim to co-create solutions that protect communities from climate-related risks and help build resilience. To date, Santam has supported 110 municipalities nationwide since 2012, enhancing local risk management and resilience against fire, floods and drought.
