Building Resilience, One Partnership at a Time

While insurance is often associated with stepping in after disaster strikes, Santam continues to shift the focus toward proactive risk mitigation through its flagship Partnership for Risk and Resilience (P4RR) programme.

Rooted in the belief that a more resilient community contributes to a safer, more stable environment for households, businesses, and broader economic activity, P4RR focuses on building long-term capacity by partnering with government and local structures across South Africa.

Here are some of the key developments so far in 2025:

Strengthening Ekurhuleni’s Emergency Response

Earlier this year, Santam formalised a partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni, a rapidly growing metro facing increased fire and flood risks. The programme launched at the Kwa Thema Fire Station with the handover of 210 containers of specialised firefighting foam, personal protective equipment, public education materials, and essential gear.

Over the next three years, this collaboration will include emergency services training, targeted risk-reduction initiatives, and public awareness campaigns, to name but a few. Demonstrating immediate impact, the equipment was put to use during a fuel tank fire in Benoni, where it helped prevent a much larger emergency.

A Five-Year Plan in the Eastern Cape

Climate-related risks continue to intensify, particularly in vulnerable regions like the Eastern Cape, where flooding, droughts, storms and veld fires are becoming more frequent and severe.

In May, Santam signed a five-year partnership agreement with the Eastern Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre with focus on supporting municipalities with planning, capacity building, and the implementation of concrete risk reduction strategies.

Flood Relief in Mthatha

In June, one may recall the severe flooding in the Eastern Cape that resulted in tragic loss of life, widespread property damage, and infrastructure collapse. Santam contributed R200,000 in emergency relief through the South African Red Cross Society to support those most affected in the Mthatha area.

Educating Future Risk Leaders

Santam also supported the 2025 Disaster Management School Debate Competitions in partnership with the Capricorn and Ehlanzeni District Municipalities. Over 60 schools from Limpopo and Mpumalanga participated in discussions on disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and risk reduction.

By engaging students in critical conversations about local disaster risks and resilience, these initiatives contribute to long-term awareness and preparedness by fostering a generation that will carry forward the principles of resilience and sustainability values that will benefit every sector of society, including the insurance industry and its clients.

A Long-Term Commitment to Stability

Santam’s approach to disaster risk management remains grounded in the principle that risk is best managed proactively before it materialises. While fast, effective response in times of crisis remains essential, sustained investment in risk reduction and preparedness helps reduce exposure, lower long-term costs, and protect the ecosystems in which businesses and communities operate.
