Santam has been known for its investment in training and skills development, which includes insurance technical skills, leadership and management development, employee assistance for academic studies, learnerships and quality assurance. We’ve recently redesigned our graduate programme to offer a unique range of development opportunities providing you with skills to grow South Africa’s challenging economy.

Graduate Development Programme


The Santam Graduate Programme provides unemployed graduates with an exciting opportunity to kick-start and accelerate their career path. True to Santam’s commitment to develop and inspire fresh talent, unemployed graduates can expect plenty of support and guidance as they develop their skills in their chosen field.

Target Audience

We are looking for exceptional young talent who want to make a difference. Unemployed graduates (between the ages 22 – 30) must be in possession of a degree in the following fields:

  • Insurance/Risk Management/Law
  • Actuarial Science/Tax/Marketing
  • Mathematics/Statistics/Data Science
  • Finance/Accounting/Economics
  • Chemical / Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science/Information Technology/Human Resources
  • Agriculture/Hydrology/Geomatics

Course Outline

The Santam Graduate Programme will provide unemployed graduates with access to a 24-month programme in order to make a successful transition from university to the world of work. They will be exposed to formal development as well as on the job training. The programme is designed as per the following six pillars:

  • Pillar 1 (Settle In): Onboarding
  • Pillar 2 (Step Up): Anchor Programme (UFS Graduate Programme – 72 Credits)
  • Pillar 3 (Strengthen): Core Competencies
  • Pillar 4 (Specialise): Elective Learning (Technical Skills Academy Offerings)
  • Pillar 5 (Stand Out): Future Fit Leadership  Competencies and Stretch Assignments
  • Pillar 6 (Shift): Workplace Project/ Stretch Assignment

Programme Duration

Programme runs for 24 months from March current year to 2nd year end February.

Learner Internship Programme


This entry-level transformation initiative aims to build a pipeline of talented people (unemployed matriculants) for core skills who will support business in meeting its objectives by addressing the present lack of skills within the financial services sector.

Target Audience

Unemployed SA citizens between ages 18-28 must be in possession of Matric Certificate:

  • Maths (passed at 40% or more) or Maths Literacy (passed at 60% or more)
  • English and second language both passed at 50% or more

Programme Qualification and Outline

  • Learners are enrolled on the Further Education & Training Certificate: Short-Term Insurance Level 4 Qualification
  • Qualifying learners go through and write the FSCA RE5 (representatives) exam

Programme Duration

This programme runs for 12 months – March current year to February

Lizé has served as CEO of Santam since January 2015. Before being appointed to her role at Santam, she served as Chief Executive of Sanlam Personal Finance from 2002. She started her career in actuarial training in Sanlam in 1985 and held various senior positions in the Group’s retail business. She serves as director of Stalker Hutchison Admiral (Pty) Ltd, Centriq group of companies, MiWay group of companies, Emerald Risk Transfer (Pty) Ltd, SSI group of companies, Saham Reinsurance Ltd and SAIA.

Ebrahim is responsible for group sourcing and facilities, leveraging the group’s procurement spending power and scale to manage efficiency in the supply chain and enabling operational excellence, developing suppliers, driving opportunities related to new initiatives and developing enterprises. Ebrahim drives group-wide transformation to ensure sustainability by setting targets and ensuring that the group meets its BEE responsibilities.

Edward is responsible for growing gross premium income and underwriting profit through the company’s commercial and personal lines distribution channels under the Santam brand. Edward manages the efforts of business partners and employees, analyses the competitive environment and develops future strategies to strengthen the group’s competitive position.

Hennie has been the chief financial officer of Santam since September 2012. Prior to his role at Santam he was a director at PwC, where he had worked since 1993. His range of experience within the financial services industry covers general and life insurance as well as banking and investment management. He currently serves a director of Centriq group of companies, MiWay group of companies, SSI group of companies, Santam Specialist Underwriting Managers, Swanvest 120 (Pty) Ltd, Sanlam Emerging Markets (Pty) Ltd, Indwe Broker Holdings Ltd and Santam Namibia Ltd.

John is responsible for the underwriting function (including strategy and pricing), product solutions, actuarial services (including rating), developing and implementing the

He also oversees the development and maintenance of systems and processes to support the operation of these functions and provides technical support to SEM partner businesses.
