Getting ready for winter? Check out these tips
Be prepared this winter
Cold weather has arrived! Prepare for winter and keep your home warm, safe and dry with this handy checklist with tips and maintenance hacks.
Step 1: Get your roof ship shape
Do a visual inspection of your roof, both inside and out.
- Look out for any damaged sections or where tiles have come loose.
- Remove any debris—like old leaves and vegetation—and double-check that your gutters are clear. If you have a skylight, make sure the area around it has been cleaned of debris before storm season.
- Check your attic and ceilings for any signs of water damage, which can alert you to a leak.

Step 2: Be fire safe
There’s nothing better than a cosy fire on a chilly evening. Stay safe while you keep warm.
- Never leave a fire unattended and always use a screen.
- Dust and wipe down any heaters, check for fraying power cords, and clean or replace any filters, for instance, on a fan heater.
- Don’t overload circuits—rather, use a multi-plug with surge protection.
- Always turn off heaters and electric blankets when going to bed.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy and make sure it’s serviced.
Step 3: Drive carefully on the roads
Strong winds and rain can exacerbate existing road dangers, so slow down and pay attention to your surroundings. Remember, standing water can conceal potholes. Avoid driving in gale-force winds when there is a risk of trees falling over on the road.
Make sure your car is ready to handle the storm:
- Replace worn-out wipers
- Test your battery
- Check your tyre pressure
Step 4: Time for your insurance check-up
Take a few moments to check your insurance cover and see if you’re properly protected over winter. You’ll want to check your home insurance, home contents insurance, and car insurance. Consider whether you have sufficient cover in the event of a major incident.
