Carl is the 10th generation farmer on their farm and thanked Santam for the great acknowledgement. He honoured his father and his forefathers for their legacy and what he is able to learn from them.

Santam Agriculture sponsors the Young Farmer competition on a provincial level in the Western Cape, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga. Gerhard Diedericks, head: Santam Agriculture, says Santam is pleased to be associated with a competition that rewards high calibre, young South African farmers for their hard work and contributions to the industry.

“As the leading South African insurer we have a responsibility to help stimulate a positive environment for young farmers, organised agriculture and agri-businesses in South Africa. Sponsorships such as these, not only bring us closer to our stakeholders, but also give us the opportunity to get critical input when developing custom-made products to address specific needs".

“We at Santam Agriculture believe that effective risk management (in the form of adequate crop and asset insurance) is vital – and this is where we are making a real difference to help farmers create a sustainable future. We endeavour to make insurance even more accessible, affordable and attractive to farmers".

Gerhard adds that Santam’s involvement in the provincial Young Farmer competitions also contributes to promoting excellence in farming. “This competition is about setting benchmarks for farmers to aspire to. Excellence in farming is the best way to make agriculture competitive locally and internationally. We hope the Young Farmer Competition would continue to inspire young farmers to farm in a sustainable and technologically advanced manner and stay at the forefront of agricultural developments,” Gerhard concludes.
