Vusi Khanyile appointed chairman of Santam board

The Board of Santam, South Africa’s largest general insurer, is pleased to announce the appointment of Vusumuzi (Vusi) Phillip Khanyile as its chairperson with effect from 1 July 2018.

Mr Khanyile joined the Santam board as an Independent Non-Executive Director on 23 April 2018, having previously served as a director between April 2010 and May 2013. He also served as Chairman of the Board from 2 June 2010 to 29 May 2013. Mr Khanyile will serve as a member of the Company’s Nominations Committee as well as the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.

Mr Khanyile holds a B.Com (Honours) in Accounting and Finance from the University of Birmingham, a Fellowship in Development Finance from Princeton University and an Honorary Doctorate from Walter Sisulu University. He was part of the team that established Thebe Investment Corporation in 1992. The Thebe group, under the leadership of Mr Khanyile has been involved in and awarded several large commercial transactions.

Mr Khanyile replaces Grant Gelink who resigned as Chairman and Non-Executive Director on 30 June 2018. Mr Gelink served on the board from 1 June 2012 and as Chairman since 30 May 2013. He has contributed significantly to the success of Santam during his tenure, serving on the Audit, Risk, Nominations, Human Resources and Remuneration and Investment Committees. The management and Board of Santam take this opportunity to thank him for his loyal and dedicated contribution to the Group.

Mr Junior Ngulube, who joined the Board in April 2018, has been appointed to serve as a member of the company’s Social, Ethics and Sustainability Committee with effect from 1 July 2018.  Mr Ngulube was previously CEO of Munich Re of Africa and is currently CEO of Sanlam Emerging Markets.
