ABOUT THIS REPORT

This Sustainability Report covers Santam’s sustainability-related activities during the period 1 January to 31 December 2009. The report addresses the scope and operations of all Santam’s direct business units in terms of the material issues outlined in the section headed ‘Issues material to the sustained development of Santam’s business’. Our intermediary partners operate their business activities independently of Santam, and therefore we only report on matters that directly link partners to our business imperatives. Data in this report relate to Santam South Africa only.

Where we have presented data and statistics, these apply to all Santam’s business operations, unless otherwise stated. For example, our transformation statistics relate to the whole group, while carbon footprint data relate only to the Santam head office.

Our previous Sustainability Report covered the period 1 January to 31 December 2008. There have not been any significant changes to the Santam business since 2008 that would markedly affect our reporting. Note that our parent firm, Sanlam, also publishes its own sustainability report that can be accessed at www.sanlam.co.za.

Alignment to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

The GRI Reporting Guidelines informed our sustainability-related reporting for the period 1 January to 31 December 2009. We have made reference to the GRI’s G3 indicators and are self-declared level-B compliant, based on the information in this report. You can view our GRI Content Index for the period 1 January to 31 December 2009 here.

Report Assurance

While we have not obtained independent third-party assurance of this Sustainability Report for the 2009 reporting period, strategic statistical data, such as those relating to transformation, broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) and our carbon footprint have been independently assessed and verified. Santam’s Internal Audit performed a review of selected data and statements in this report, and concluded that these are in agreement with supporting evidence provided by management.

Santam is committed to seeking independent third-party assurance over our Sustainability Report for the next (2010) reporting period.
