HUMAN CAPITAL
The success of our business is contingent on being able to attract, develop and retain skilled staff in an environment where there is a shortage of high-level financial sector skills. We focus particularly on attracting and developing previously disadvantaged individuals.

An assessment undertaken by SAIA indicated that the business risk associated with HIV/Aids in the workplace is relatively low for the short-term insurance industry. However, we believe we have a moral and business responsibility to take this issue seriously and to manage it professionally.

We address this issue by providing a safe working environment for all our staff, and through education and awareness initiatives. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is managed as part of the Facilities Management process. Compliance levels at all of Santam's larger centres were assessed during 2009 with eight of the 10 larger offices exceeding the 90% target stipulated by the Department of Labour. Four of our buildings did not achieve the minimum defensible target of 80% compliance and we are in the process of remedying the shortcomings.
Small-branch compliance is being aligned with the Sanlam Group standards and procedures. An electronic assessment system for our smaller offices, ‘Comply on Line’ will be introduced during the first quarter of 2010, and our goal is to get these offices up to 90% compliance within three months of implementation. Santam’s ultimate goal is to achieve a 100% compliance rating for all our offices.
An awareness campaign was launched in February 2009 to ensure that all staff understand our OHS policy. One of the requirements of this policy is to inform all staff about their rights and responsibilities under the Act and to acquire proof, in the form of their signature, that they are aware of these. The electronic Right-to-Know system for personnel facilitates this and is operating smoothly.
